– what if he’s scared? –

Pa and me
1989 – One of the few pictures in existence of my father and I. The following piece is written in honor of his birthday, which is today. We’ve mended our broken bond, but we clearly have a long way to go.

Told him once, told him twice:
‘make some time or pay the price.’
I can’t come to meet him on a
wonderful whim.
Told him once, told him twice;
can’t he take his own advice?
Doesn’t sound so serious about
seeing his kin.

Twenty-something, twenty-something
years away from father’s flesh,
feelin’ nothin’, feelin’ not one
tear in vain for how he left, but
what if it’s some silent crying,
bleeding on the inside, dying,
that is keeping him straight lying
right to himself?

My forgiveness ain’t no fluke,
no joke, no shady word.
Come right around the bend; I
promise no backlash, no hurt.
You cannot let me down…
no need to be afraid.
You cannot kill me now…
no need to be afraid.
